Post-Graduate Training in Clinical Hypnosis
Assessment Details
There are two forms of assessment:
- Homework Exercises to be completed during training; and
- A post-course case report and oral presentation.
These tasks are mandatory and must be submitted by the dates specified in the course syllabus.
Homework Exercises
Module 4
Following Training Day 1, after practising with the standard scale used to assess hypnotic capacity, students should:
- View the Training Module: “Assessment of Hypnotic Capacity” again.”This Module should be viewed several times, focusing on: (a) overall procedure; (b) subject's behavioural responses; (c) subject's subjective report of trance experiences; & (d) scoring procedure, using the SHCS Pro Forma report form, which is provided to students at the end of the Training Day.
- Practise with the assessment protocol, to develop competency and familiarity with the standard test.
- Complete three (3) assessments, using professional colleagues or friends as subjects. Subjects are advised that the student is learning clinical hypnosis and that no therapy accompanies the standard test.
- Submit the three written reports to the course coordinator.
The reports MUST be submitted and assessed prior to Training Day 2.
Upon completion of Module 5 (after Training Day 2)
The aim of this Homework Exercise is for students to design induction scripts for two of their SHCS subjects.
Select or create an induction script for each subject, using imagery ot other induction strategy based upon the subjects' preferred style, as assessed in their SHCS score. Students can use the text of sample scripts provided as part of the course, or create their own, but the scripts must be appropriate for subjects' preferred style.
Scripts should have induction and de-induction phraseology, with a suggestion of calm relaxation after induction. Include a rationale for each script with this subject.
Bring these written scripts to Training Day 3, for presentation to the group.
Upon completion of Modules 6-8 (after Training Day 3)
Using their scripts from Training Day 3, students add at least one ego-strengthening suggestion and at least one post-hypnotic suggestion to their induction and de-induction scripts.
Bring these written scripts to Training Day 4, for presentation to the group.
Upon completion of Module 9 (after Training Day 4)
Students select two of their current clients. We recommend selecting patients or client who are experiencing any of the anxiety disorders as a clinical feature or a habit disorder. Other health and mental health professionals can prepare scripts appropriate for their patient or client population and the treatment issue is at the discretion of the students.
Completion of these scripts form the basis of the post course assessment.
For the first client, students prepare a treatment script, including induction and de-induction, together with an anxiety or stress reduction suggestion. If appropriate, include an indirect suggestion. Add relaxation suggestions and post-hypnotic suggestions as appropriate, depending on the issue for which the patient or client has presented. The format for the report is provided in a Presentation Pro Forma given to students on the day.
Do not include identifying data to ensure patient/client confidentiality.
Post Course Assessment
As part of the final Zoom session following the course, students present their report to the student group, the Group Facilitator and Course Coordinator, using the Presentation Pro Forma. Each student is allocated 15 minutes for their presentation, which is followed with group feedback.
Using their second selected patient or client, students then prepare a second written case presentation, detailing their application of clinical hypnosis within a treatment approach designed for the individual. This is a formal case presentation, with the format and headings prescribed by the course coordinator.
These formal written case reports must be submitted to the Course Coordinator within one month of course completion.
More details about post-course assessment, especially the structure for the formal written case presentation, is provided closer to course completion and students are given every support in completing these tasks. Sample reports are also made available in advance.
There may be some practitioners who feel that the post-course assessment may be daunting, but we provide full support and highlight that award of certification of course completion is dependent upon fulfilling all assessment activities. These are also designed to help students gain a full understanding of clinical hypnosis and, to not only know how to implement hypnosis within their clinical repertoire, but feeling comfortable and motivated to do so.
Upon successful completion of the case presentation, students receive formal certification denoting completion of their Post-Graduate Training in Clinical Hypnosis.
